  • Spheres add special touch to Oz show

Global Stainless, just like many local businesses, is lending a helping hand to Hawera Repertory's production of the Wizard of Oz. Lincoln Raikes, the owner of the company, says he is delighted to help Repertory with a couple of special props.

Based in a modest workshop in Normanby, Global Stainless produces world-class products that are used internationally; many in London artist Anish Kapoor's sculptures.

The stainless steel spheres are made and polished on site in Normanby. When finished they are perfectly formed large mirror spheres. To see what the spheres look like, search "the tall tree and the eye" online and see them in use. The sculptures are valued in the multi-millions.

Lincoln Raikes is the father of the show's Tinman, Bergen Raikes. Bergen has honed his skills working in his father's business and counts experimenting with renewable energy sources among his many interests. The amazing engineering skills run in the family, with Bergen having hand-made his Tinman costume for the show. The costume took more than 80 hours to produce and is stunning. To enjoy the props, the more-than-100 bright costumes created by Judy Brown and her assistants for this show, and a huge set and revolving stage, get your tickets from Ticket Direct or the i-Site in Hawera.

The show runs from June 28-July 6 at the Hawera Memorial Theatre.
